The event replicates the conditions of an International Competition, including full-scale competition delivery, CIS marking and assessment systems, and the use of test projects aligned with those used at recent or upcoming WorldSkills International Competitions. By mirroring international standards and expectations, the Global Skills Challenge helps raise competition quality, strengthen technical excellence, and support continuous improvement across participating countries.
As a training exercise, the Global Skills Challenge is not open to the general public; however, visitors and invited spectators are welcome. Typically held about 3 months prior to the WorldSkills International Competition, the event brings together competitors, experts, and officials from member countries to benchmark skills, test systems, and refine competition readiness in a realistic international setting.

Global Skills Challenge 2026
The 2026 Global Skills Challenge was the largest international skills excellence event held in Australia and has formed a key component of the Australian Skillaroos preparation for the 48th WorldSkills International Competition in Shanghai, China.
The event took place from 23–29 June 2026 across three TAFE NSW training facilities in Wollongong, Wollongong West, and Shellharbour. It included four days of full-scale competition, CIS marking and assessment systems, and test projects based on those used at WSC2024 Lyon or released ahead of WSC2026 Shanghai.
